- Intentional Eating by Michael B. Smith
- No thing is more elemental to life than eating.
However an organism takes food into its body, if that process
stops, so does life. This physiological fact of our own existence
rarely enters the consciousness of the privileged denizens of
the world. We acknowledge pangs of hunger by selecting something
to eat from our heavily capitalized and extravagantly wasteful
cornucopia. The ease, convenience, and low cost of sating hunger
trump all other relationships to food for the majority of world's
well-fed. As a consequence, rites of harvest, preparation, and
communal consumption have diminished in importance. We therefore
do not think enough about our food, about its origins, its function
as a social binding agent, its effect on our bodies (at least
beyond the "good for you/bad for you" dualism that hardly constitutes
really thinking about food).
- Ten Directions for Food and Anarchy by Joseph Heathcott
- There are many consequences to the massive scale
of our food production, distribution, marketing, and consumption.
While we may celebrate its "convenience" or laude the "freedom
of choice" it seems to provide, in reality its convenience masks
disturbing inefficiencies, unsustainable extractive practices,
and terrible injustices in distribution. The apparent abundance
masks a basic orthodoxy in the way our food is grown, processed,
and marketed. "Freedom of choice" really is not what it seems,
since in fact we obtain most of our food within a narrowly defined
system of capitalist production, underwritten by government subsidy
at all levels--from the point of production (price controls, fallow
payments, environmental clean-up of toxins, wars to protect fuel
inputs, and laws that favor large-scale farms at the expense of
family farms and smallholding) to the point of consumption (food
stamps, laws that favor corporate supermarkets). We have many
"choices" within one basic food system, rather than many choices
within a heterogeneous food system.

There's been a move among think tanks (particularly RAND) and policymakers
to come up with ways of dealing with the "problem" of the Internet.
It seems they are concerned about decentralized, popular, democratized
media, and want to get busy finding ways of bringing the Internet
under control, like the other mass media: newspapers, radio, film,
and television. Characteristically, they use militaristic euphemisms
to define the coming "netwar" of the future, which amounts to the
destruction of popular democracy on the Internet in favor of centralized,
sanitized control. More...

This paper was originally written 11.29.95. as a result of discussions
that we were having in San Francisco Food Not Bombs about our politics
and how we represent our politics in literature. In a meeting on
11.09.95. we embarked on a rather in-depth and thought provoking
discussion about anarchism and FNB. Most of us at the meeting strongly
believed that FNB in its structure and goals was and always had
been anarchist in orientation. However, there were several people
who raised concerns about anarchist politics and the principles
of FNB. More...

Many of you tell us that you love Practical Anarchy zine (the paper
version) and that you think it is one of the best anarchist magazines
around. If you'd like to help us out, check out our página do Help.
